Veronica

Veronica
(first century)
   Legendary Saint.
Veronica was said to be a woman of Jerusalem who wiped the blood and sweat off the face of Jesus as he made his way to his place of execution. The handkerchief returned with the imprint of the divine face on it. This incident is regularly portrayed in ‘Stations of the Cross’ series of devotional pictures. Veronica’s handkerchief was one of the most venerated relics in the Roman Catholic Church and examples were preserved in Rome, Milan and Jaen. The apocryphal Acts of Pilate identified Veronica with the woman Jesus healed of a haemorrhage (matthew, Chapter 9).
